What is root canal therapy?

Inside the hard white enamel of your teeth, another layer of hard dentin surrounds a pulpy interior that contains the blood vessels and nerves that keep your teeth alive. The pulp extends from the crown of a tooth through the roots where it connects to the supporting tissue.

Root canal therapy is an endodontic treatment to remove decayed tissue from the pulpy interior of your tooth. The inside of your tooth can be damaged in several ways. You might have severe tooth decay that penetrates the interior of your tooth, or you could have a crack or chip that allows bacteria to enter your tooth. In some cases, dental trauma could lead to pulp damage.

What are the signs I need root canal therapy

In most cases, you can’t see tooth decay or internal damage with the naked eye. Some of the signs you could need root canal therapy include:

Tooth Pain

Sensitivity to temperature

Pimples on your gums

A chipped or cracked tooth

Swollen, sore gums

Darkening of a tooth or gums

In some cases, you might not have any noticeable symptoms. The only way to know for sure if you need root canal therapy is to schedule an appointment with Dr. Bercovitch and have X-rays taken so he can examine the insides of your teeth.

What happens during root canal therapy?

Advances in dental technology have made root canal therapy nearly pain-free. Dr. Bercovitch also has over 35 years of dental experience and has perfected his root canal technique.

Dr. Bercovitch begins by thoroughly numbing your tooth and the surrounding tissue. Using special equipment, he makes an opening in your tooth and removes the decayed and inflamed tissue from inside your tooth. He rinses your tooth to make sure it’s clear of debris and checks that all of the damaged tissue is gone.

Next, Dr. Bercovitch fills your tooth with a biocompatible rubber-like material. Finally, he seals your tooth with dental cement and a filling. If necessary, he fits you with a dental crown to protect your tooth. Dr. Bercovitch uses in-office CEREC technology to design and make dental crowns in approximately an hour. You can have a root canal and a dental crown in a single visit.
