How did my teeth get stained?
Your daily eating and drinking habits, from your morning cup of coffee to the soda you have while watching a movie, can contribute to tooth discoloration. Other common causes of tooth discoloration include tea, wine, berries, and tobacco.
Your teeth can also become more yellow as you age and your enamel thins. Trauma and exposure to tetracycline or excessive amounts of fluoride can also cause intrinsic — internal — staining. Topical teeth-whitening treatments aren’t always effective on intrinsic staining. Dr. Bercovitch might recommend veneers or dental crowns as an alternative to cover this kind of staining.
What happens during teeth whitening?
Dr. Bercovitch uses the innovative GLO in-office whitening treatments. During the procedure, he places a soft rubber guard in your mouth to hold your lips away from your teeth. Then he brushes a hydrogen peroxide gel on to your teeth.
While you wear protective goggles, he places the GLO device into your mouth that apples light and warmth to activate the gel, while also preventing dehydration of your teeth and gums.
In approximately a half-hour, your teeth-whitening treatment is complete, and your teeth are noticeably whiter and brighter.
How does teeth whitening work?
The GLO teeth-whitening system uses hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide molecules enter the enamel of your teeth and break up the stains, which brightens your teeth.
Is teeth whitening safe?
While teeth-whitening treatments are safe, your best option is to have professional teeth-whitening treatments. Dr. Bercovitch can use stronger concentrations of the bleaching agents than you can purchase at your local drug store. This means that you don’t need to keep the bleaching gel on your teeth for as long to get brighter, whiter teeth.
How should I take care of my teeth after a whitening treatment?
While the GLO teeth-whitening treatment is designed to minimize tooth and gum sensitivity, you might still feel sensitive for a day or two after your teeth-whitening treatment. You can use straws and take care not to have food or drink that is too cold or warm.
If you continue to drink coffee, tea, or wine, stains can develop again. You should make sure to brush and floss with a whitening toothpaste and limit your consumption of products that can stain your teeth.
