What are dental implants?
Dental implants are prosthetic teeth that Dr. Bercovitch places directly into your jaw. Implants consist of a titanium post, a custom-made crown, and an abutment that attaches them. They’re a popular and effective way to replace missing teeth, providing a restoration that looks and feels natural.
The titanium post is an artificial tooth root that your jawbone tissue grows around in a process called osseointegration. The post anchors the rest of the false tooth. You can have a single dental implant, or Dr. Bercovitch can replace multiple teeth with implants.
What is the process for getting dental implants?
While Dr. Bercovitch uses state-of-the-art CEREC technology to custom design and make dental crowns in his office, getting dental implants usually requires a few appointments. During your initial consultation, he examines your teeth and jaw and takes X-rays and bone scans to ensure your jawbone is strong enough to support dental implants.
If necessary, Dr. Bercovitch can perform a bone graft procedure to strengthen your jawbone. When he’s satisfied that your jaw can support dental implants, he surgically implants the posts into your jawbone.
The osseointegration process can take several months, but when your posts are securely fused to your jaw, you have an appointment for Dr. Bercovitch to fit your abutments and crowns.
The CEREC equipment allows him to digitally scan your mouth and design a crown to fit into your mouth and match your remaining natural teeth perfectly. Your crown should be ready in about an hour. At that point, Dr. Bercovitch attaches the crown, and you go home with a beautifully restored smile.
What are the benefits of dental implants?
Dental implants provide a variety of benefits. They look and function just like natural teeth, so you have a natural-looking smile. The implant also stimulates bone growth in your jaw, which helps keep the rest of your teeth in the correct positions.
Dental implants are also relatively low maintenance. You simply brush and floss normally and have routine dental check-ups. You don’t need to do anything special to get used to them or use sticky adhesives or special cleansers like you would with dentures.
